Driving to work on Saturday morning, I got to Orrville & not one traffic light was working. Arrived at work & no electricity...in fact there was no electricity at all in the entire city. We opened anyway & did our best to check out items manually, in the dark. As the morning progressed, many patrons came in & speculated as to what happened. But none of the explanations were as good or as comical as what really happened...
"SQUIRREL WREAKS HAVOC AT ORRVILLE TRANSFORMER CAUSING POWER OUTAGE" read the headline in yesterday's paper. "The observance of Public Power Week started out with some real sizzle, an explosion and a fire-all at the electric utility plant. The result was a complete power outage lasting more than 3 hours for all of the utility's some 9,000 customers. The Director of the utilities company said a squirrel got into the main transformer. The resulting short caused "a minor explosion" - heard all over town-that fractured two main insulators, followed by a fire in a breaker box. The director went on to say the utility workers found the remains of the squirrel, but said the animal should logically have been vaporized by the large amount of electric current with which in came in contact."
